Affordable Travel for the South African

With the weak Rand, high interest rates and an economy-crippling financial crisis, the idea of international travel for the average South African might seem a bit improbable. This is especially true for the wine enthusiast who wants to explore the world’s winelands outside of SA borders, as destinations such as France, California and Australia are not particularly cheap.

But in trying times like these one needs to look at alternative options where affordability is priority and quality is not compromised. One such destination is Mendoza, Argentina. This new-world wine region nestled beneath the Andes produces high quality wines and remains relatively undiscovered. The Argentinean peso is another reason to make the trip to the South American continent. AR$1 amounts to 2.54 ZAR and goes a long way considering that a decent bottle of Argentinean wine is about 70 ZAR.

For those of you who would like to explore what the world of wine has to offer outside our beloved South Africa, then Mendoza, Argentina would be a good start… and an affordable one at that. Considering flight options to Buenos Aires, or any other location for that matter? Take a look at Travelstart. You simply type in your destination and this service will automatically scour around 50 different airline companies for the most affordable flights available. Hotels and cars can also be searched for and booked via Travelstart. I personally use their website for all my travels and hope that you also find this service helpful.

If anyone has already had the opportunity to visit the Mendoza wine region (or any others for that matter) we at My Wine Cellar would love to hear of your first-hand experience.

Cheers!

Brandon Marc
