The Wine Rating Debate

Any form of rating system is bound to be flawed… at least that’s what I believe. And when it comes to a subject as complex as wine, rating systems just won’t do. The problem is, the consumer market demands a system in which wine can be easily compared, and I can certainly understand the reasoning behind this. People who don’t have a deeper understanding of wine need a system in which they can make an ‘informed’ decision regarding their purchase.

It’s been said over and over again, but it’s worth repeating, that wine is a personal preference. There are just a few critical indicators that one could ‘learn’ to assess the general quality of wine, but beyond that it’s all down to the taster.

In my curiosity, I’ve created a simple poll below in order to gain a better understanding on how my reader’s assess wine. Simply select the option that best describes your opinion and click ‘vote’. Remember to check back to see the development of the poll results!

I personally am a fan of the 100 points scale. It is the most understood form by most consumers and I think the most accurately gauged.

Perhaps, however I think it’s always difficult to discern between two wines rated 91 and 92, for example.

Hi Morten,

That’s an interesting rating system that I haven’t heard about before… until now :) Thank you for sharing.

I’m curious to know where exactly this wine rating system is used?

Cheers!

I am using it on my wine site http://winesworld.net along with notes and comments on the wines. In Norway it is commond for the newspapers to use dices on rating everythings from movies, wines to books etc. so I did adapt it to get a easy to understand rating system on my wine guide for the common people.

Very interesting… perhaps your new Nordic rating system will gain in popularity :)

Cheers!
